"THE THREE OF US"

Tuesday, May 4, 2023

This is mix: “The Three Of Us 5-4-23B.wav”

  1. I added M-Audio KeyRig E.Piano + Pad and panned 30% to left.
  2. I added Cakewalk SI Strings (dark) and panned 30% to right.
  3. I lowered the Master Bus in Cakewalk to -2.8 dB as the original file was mixed hot.

This is a reference mix of “Harlem Goat” from Kevin’s 3/20/23 vocal session in which he put vocals on six songs.

"I WISH YOU LOVE"

Sunday, May 21, 2023

This is mix: “I Wish You Love 3 5-21-23.wav”

  1. I redid the intro with just piano.
  2. I put Soothe2 on Kevin’s lead vocal – using preset Harsh vocal 2
  3. After intro I held off with piano until :26 into the tune. And up to that point I boosted the acoustic guitar track, then brought the acoustic guitar down again at :26.
  4. I made a clone of Kevin’s lead vocal, and on the clone, took the auto-tune off and starting at :40, replaced the phrase “From the time that I first held you” using the clone track’s vocal, ‘cuz there were some auto-tune artifacts on the original vocal track.

Monday, May 1, 2023

This is mix: “I Wish You Love 2 5-1-23.wav”

  1. I added background vocals to bridge.
  2. I added an English horn at the end.
  3. I’ve left the synth pad out until the first chorus.
  4. I boosted the drum fill right before the bridge.
  5. I fine-tuned quite a few of the volume envelopes that somehow got messed up between this and my last session.

Sunday, April 30, 2023

This is mix: “I Wish You Love 2 4-30-23.wav”

  1. I added three tracks of strings starting at the bridge.
  2. I redid the ending and added a ritard.
  3. I added piano triplets starting at the last verse.

Monday, March 6, 2023

This is mix: “I Wish You Love – SWAYING 2.wav”

  1. Piano triplets can be added later when this gets into Cakewalk.
  2. Many of the errant passing tones will be edited out.
  3. I can hear a tremolo guitar strumming some nice, slow chords.
  4. Ritard can be added at end once in Cakewalk.

"LOVELY SUSAN"

Tuesday, May 3, 2023

This is mix: “Lovely Susan 6 5-3-23.wav”

  1. a) I duplicated Kevin’s lead vocal track. b) I removed the C-major autotune from the duplicate track. c) On the original lead vocal track, I “ducked out” the two sections in the bridges where the autotune was pulling Kevin’s pitch off. d) On the duplicate track in those two respective spots, I ran autotune in Ab major (because the notes in that phrase are “C” “Ab” “G” – the “Ab” doesn’t occur in the C-major scale (but “G”, “Ab” and “C” do.) The original autotune track kept pulling that “Ab” either down to “G” or up to “A.”

Sunday, April 30, 2023

This is mix: “Lovely Susan 6 4-30-23.wav”

  1. I redid the harmony vocals at the very end, and doubled each of the 4 parts.
  2. I added brass section at the end (and playing harmony to the pan flute on the second phrase of the instrumental.)

Friday, April 28, 2023

This is mix: “Lovely Susan 6 4-28-23.wav”

  1. At the end, I recorded a vocal line in unison with Kevin’s lead vocal on “the lovely Susan” and re-recorded the three vocal harmonies at that point.
  2. Then I added a drum fill that leads into two verses (sans lead vocal) with a long fadeout to tag the song.
  3. I got rid of the pan flute at end.

Wednesday, April 26, 2023

This is mix: “Lovely Susan 6 4-26-23.wav”

  1. I added “ohhhhs & ahhhhhs”
  2. I added a pan flute instrumental and tagged it with pan flute (I’m not satisfied with the ending and will redo that.)
  3. I added Soothe2 to Kevin’s lead vocal.

"WHEN APRIL COMES"

Monday, April 24, 2023

This is mix: “When April Comes 4-24-23.wav”

  1. I fixed the acoustic guitar glitch at the end of guitar 2 track (I used the Yamaha Storia with a capo on the first fret and played the  penultimate note and final chord like an open “D”.)
  2. I reduced the level on Cakewalk’s master bus from 0.0 dB to -2.8 dB.
  3. I used the Center Focus mastering preset in Ozone 10.

"TRAVELIN' (GOOD-BYE, I WISH YOU WELL)"

Tuesday, March 25, 2023

This is mix: “Travelin’ 4-25-23.wav”

  1. Kevin put on his vocals for Session #3 (go to Project Notes for details.)

Saturday, April 15, 2023

This is mix: “Travelin’ 4-15-23.wav”

  1. I redid the guitar solo.
  2. I sync’ed up the harmony vocals on the 2nd chorus.
  3. I back off the reverb on the harmony vocals.

Friday, April 14, 2023

This is mix: “Travelin’ 4-14-23.wav”

  1. I recorded a guitar lick in the turnaround between the two, last choruses (Ibanez GX20 through the TH3 plug-in.)
  2. I muted the background vocals during the first chorus.
  3. I brought an earlier rhythm guitar (electric – Ibanez GX20) starting right after the guitar lick at the end. This rhythm part plays ’til the end.
  4. I used the Thick ‘n Low mastering preset in Ozone 10.
  5. I purchased the Smooth 2 plug-in today from Sweetwater but have not installed it yet. I think this is going to work well with Kevin’s vocals.

Thursday, April 13, 2023

This is mix: “Travelin’ 4-13-23.wav”

  1. I cleaned up ending and put a DOD kick & cymbal crash at the end.
  2. I recorded harmony vocals on the choruses.
  3. I took the piano off the intro and verses – bringing it in only on the choruses.
  4. Panned the acoustic guitar to the left at 30%.
  5. Added DOD thin tambourine to choruses from Essential Percussion.
  6. Brought Cakewalk master bus down to -2.8 dB.
  7. Used the Center Focus preset in Ozone 10.

Wednesday, April 12, 2023

This is mix: “Travelin’ 4-12-23.wav”

  1. I experimented with several electric guitar parts (Ibanez GX20) and just didn’t find any that I liked. It seemed the the guitar got swallowed up in the mix and really didn’t add anything noteworthy. So, I switched to the Yamaha Storia acoustic. The acoustic worked much better – filling out the rhythm and adding little rhythmic figures here and there.
But the acoustic is going to have to be mixed carefully to bring it out of the mix in key places. Right now, it’s pretty indistinct.
  2. I put the Sonitus Phase plug-in on the acoustic guitar Mono-Stereo preset.
  3. I edited the space leading into the last verse, i.e., cut out a bunch of measures that don’t really need to be in there.
  4. In Ozone 10, I used the Stereo Widener preset instead of the Center Focus, and I think I like the Center Focus preset better, because it seems the Stereo Widener weakens the drum track.
  5. This mix is way too hot, so the Master Bus is going to be lowered to -2.8 dB for future mixes of this song.

Sunday, March 5, 2023

In “Travelin’ 4” I changed the chord structure of the verses from:

4 5 1 4    4 1 5 1   1

"I'M COMING BACK" (current)

Wednesday, April 19, 2023

This is mix: “I’m Coming Back 4-19-23.wav”

  1. I added a plate reverb to the drums and added ProChannel compression.
  2. I added background vocals to the choruses.
  3. I added a stereo widener to the harmonium through the Sonitus phase plug-in.
  4. I moved the lead guitar from center to 10 AM.
  5. I moved the harmonium from center to 2 PM.
  6. I worked up a new preset in TH3 for the guitar.
  7. I found a preset in Soothe2 for Kevin’s vocal that I think is going to work well (I used it on this mix.)
  8. I’m noticing a little spot on Kevin’s vocal towards the end of the bridge that might be distorting (I’m not 100% sure if it’s actually distortion.) I’ll have to see if it’s: a) actually on the vocal track b) happening in the Sonitus compressor c) occurring on the master bus in Cakewalk or d) all in my imagination.

Saturday, April 15, 2023

This is mix: “I’m Coming Back 4-15-23C.wav”

  1. I activated the Soothe2 plug-in and put it on Kevin’s lead vocal. I’m using a preset called: “Kevin 2”
  2. I removed the ProChannel EQ from Kevin’s vocal.
  3. I used the Thick ‘n Low preset in Ozone 10.

This is mix: “I’m Coming Back 4-15-23B.wav”

  1. I redid the harmonium part
  2. I EQ’ed Kevin’s vocal with “Smooth lead” from the Pro Channel strip but it sounds too strident. So, I’m going to use a different EQ or just remove the EQ (and I haven’t had a chance to get Smoothe2 up and running. That should tame the resonance.)
  3. I boosted the piano run at 2:06

Sunday, April 9, 2023

This is mix: “I’m Coming Back B 4-9-23.wav”

  1. I cleaned up the guitar part
  2. I redid the “harmonium” part and used the NP-V80 general MIDI accordion. This part doesn’t come in until verse 3.
  3. I added a volume envelope to the accordion track for swells.
  4. I EQed the piano and guitar tracks to roll off some bottom end.
  5. I panned the accordion to 30% to the right.
  6. I synchronized the “crash” ending by aligning the final hit to occur on beat 1 of measure 78.
  7. I raised the threshold for compression on Kevin’s vocal.

Wednesday, April 5, 2023

This is mix: “I’m Coming Back 4-5-23.wav”

  1. Replaced old piano part with e. piano patch from VI.ONE.
  2. I added Ibanez GX30 guitar part.
  3. There are several parts in the guitar track that need to be done, but I ran out of time today and wanted to post this mix.

  5. In RealBand I fixed some chords in the guitar part in the chorus.
  6. In RealBand I put some volume envelopes on the bass and the guitar tracks.
  7. From RealBand, I merged the project to a single WAV file for this site.

"SHE'S ALWAYS LOVED YOU"

Wednesday, May 10, 2023

This is mix: “She’s Always Loved You 5 5-10-23.wav”

  1. I deleted Kevin’s low harmony on the first chorus.
  2. I brought the level of Kevin’s harmony vocal down just a pinch.
  3. I attenuated the gain on the word “was” at 12 seconds into the first verse. There was a touch of distortion on it.
  4. I added “Air Bells” from the NP-V80 at the end and gradually faded that part in. I put a Sonitus Stereo Widener on it.
  5. I brought up the volume on the Ibanez guitar part and made sure it was panned opposite the harmonium part (they were on the same side.)
  6. I faded the Ibanez guitar out at the same time that the harmonium quits (so the Ibanez wasn’t hanging over during the fade.)
  7. I mixed out the harmonium after the intro and then reintroduced it gradually starting at the first chorus at :56.
  8. I kept the drums out until the second verse at :33.

This is mix: “I Once Knew A Woman 4-22-23D.wav”

This is mix: “I Once Knew A Woman 4-22-23E.wav”

Saturday, April 22, 2023

    1. There are three mixes “C”, “D” and “E”. I’d put finger cymbals on (see #3 below.) However, on mix “C” when I transferred the mix to this webpage, I couldn’t hear the finger cymbals. So, I remixed it raising the finger cymbals from -9 dB to -0 dB for mix “D.” It was strange that, on the “C” mix, I could hear that percussion clearly on my studio monitors but almost nothing over my computer speakers system which I consider pretty good. Nevertheless, I’m still struggling the hear the finger cymbals in mix “D” over my computer speakers – but I know they shouldn’t be mixed any higher than 0 dB. So, this must be a deficiency in my computer speakers frequency response! After Kevin listened to “C” and “D” he too had difficulty hearing the percussion. So, I did a third mix and, against my better judgment, boosted the finger cymbal to +3 dB.
    2. On the chorus tag, I: a) kept the bass in, b) took out the drums, c) kept both guitars, d) added harmonium.
    3. I added a finger cymbal part in: a) first chorus and b) final verse. The single hits occur 4 beats apart (introducing a polyrhythm to this 3/4 time piece.)
    4. Tightened up the vocal harmonies on the choruses.
    5. I reworked some of the harmonium dynamics (volume swells, etc.)
    6. On the “E” mix, I took the bass out at the very end (chorus tag) as per Kevin’s suggestion.

  4. I dropped out everything on the chorus tag, except vocal and guitars 1 & 2.

Thursday, April 20, 2023

This is mix: “I Once Knew A Woman 4-20-23.wav”

  1. I added background harmonies on choruses.
  2. I added Smoothe2 to Kevin’s lead vocal.
  3. I lowered the level on the master bus from 0 to -2.8 dB.
  4. Wondering if I should take the drums & bass out on the tagged chorus (with no harmonies), so it’s just lead vocal and guitar ending the song.
  5. Redo vocal at :57 “. . . my life again.” How about up a perfect fourth on the word “again”?
  6. Redo vocal at 1:30 “Turn of the season will drive you insane.” There are lisps on “season” and “insane.”

"FAR AWAY"

Far Away”

Edgar A. Traeger, Sr. at age 86 performed this song from his childhood,

penned by an unknown composer. This was recorded at

Bird-On-Fire Recording in December of 1987 with Doug providing instrumental backing.

Where is now the merry party, I remember long ago,

Laughing ‘round the Christmas fireside, brightened by its ruddy glow

Or on summer’s balmy evening, in the fields upon the hay,

They have all dispersed and wandered, far away, far away,

They have all dispersed and wandered, far away, far away

Some have gone to lands far distant and with strangers made their home,

Some upon the world of water all their lives are forced to roam,

Some have gone from us forever, longer here they might not stay,

They have reached a fairer region, far away, far away,

They have reached a fairer region, far away, far away

There are still some few remaining who remind us of the past,

But they change as all thing change here, nothing in this world can last,

Years roll on and pass forever, what is coming who can say?

‘Ere this closes many maybe, far away, far away,
‘Ere this closes many maybe, far away, far away.

"I'M COMING BACK" (old version)

Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022

This is mix: “I’m Coming Back 12-15-22 sans vocal.wav”

  1. I abutted some of the clips and adjusted their fades to avoid “thunks” and “blips.”
  2. I aligned the timing of the tambourine track.
  3. I froze both guitar tracks and also the drums & tambourine tracks.

Below are Kevin’s updated lyrics for “I’m Coming Back”

Verse 1
So many years ago we had a love
That we knew would last forever
Then I went away I had to go
All for the better

Chorus
I’m coming back to find what I need to find
I’m coming back to get some peace of mind

Verse 2
You were on my mind I heard your voice
Saw a smile that could light up any room
I stayed away too long I should’ve known
Home is what I needed

Chorus

Bridge
I feel alive I look in your eyes
And there’s the girl I love
You know it’s true everything’s new
It’s what we’ve been dreaming of

Verse 3
So many years ago we had a love
That we knew would last forever
We found love again we found our hearts
The feeling never dies

Chorus
I’m coming back to find what I need to find
I’m coming back to get some peace of mind
I’m coming back to do what I need to do
I’m coming back for the one and only you
I’m coming back to find what I need to find
I’m coming back for the one and only you

This is mix: “I’m Coming Back 12-13-22 sans vocal.wav”

Monday, Dec. 12, 2022

This is mix: “I’m Coming Back 12-12-22.wav”

  1. I redid the vocal line on the chorus “I’m coming back, to find what . . .” as per Kevin’s suggestion.
  2. I redid the third line of the third verse using the right lyrics (yesterday, I put the wrong lyrics in there.)”We found love again” instead of “And then I went away.”
  3. I redid the 2nd line of the 2nd verse: “So I kept lookin’ . . .”
  4. I added three-part vocal harmony on the bridge and last choruses.
  5. I EQed the three vocal tracks with the “Male vocal” preset in the ProChannel equalizer.
  6. I changed the bass from the Chris Hein “upright gut bass” to the VI.One “fretless bass octaves.”
  7. I added the Sonitus compressor on the bass.
  8. I changed the lyrics in the second line of the first verse as follows (and corresponding line 2nd line of the third verse) from: “That we were sure . . .” to “That we knew . . .”
  9. I added a hold on the last note of the bass going into the drum fade at the end.
  10. I used the Greg Calbi – “High detailed accentuated” preset in Ozone 10 for mastering.
  11. I engaged the 2nd Ibanez electric guitar part that happens during the bridge.

Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022

This is mix “I’m Coming Back 12-11-22.wav”

  1. I redid vocals and added some harmony parts.
  2. I need to redo the last two lines of verse 3 (see below in red—I sang the wrong lyrics.)
  3. I added a long drum fade
  4. I used the “Smooth bass” preset in Ozone 10 for mastering.
  5. I rewrote parts of the lyrics as follows:

I’M COMING BACK

Verse 1
So many years ago we had a love
That we were sure would last forever
And then I went away and there you go
It’s probably all for the better

Chorus
I’m coming back to find what I need to find
I’m coming back to get some piece of mind

Verse 2
‘Cuz you were on my mind
So, I kept lookin’ seems the road goes on forever
I stayed away too long so here I go
It’s all for the better

Chorus

Bridge
I feel alive I look in your eyes
And there’s the girl I knew
You know it too, everything’s new
It’s what we’re dreaming of

Verse 3
So many years ago we had a love
We were sure would last forever
We found love again so here I go
It’s all for the better

Chorus
I’m coming back to find what I need to find
I’m coming back to get some peace of mind
I’m coming back to do what I need to do
I’m coming back for the one and only you
I’m coming back to find what I need to find
I’m coming back to get some peace of mind

Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022

This was mix “I’m Coming Back 12-10-22.wav”

  1. I TOOK THIS MIX DOWN ‘cuz it was TERRIBLE!!
  2. I changed the structure and put some dummy vocals on for placeholders.
  3. This mix is too hot, and I’ll redo it tomorrow.
  4. I’ve altered the lyrics for verse 1 as follows:

So many years ago we had a love
That we were sure would last, forever
And then I went away, and there you go
(It’s) all for the better

Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2022

Saturday, Dec. 3, 2022

This is mix: “Song That Has No Words 12-3-22.wav”

  1. I added 8th-note tambourine to verse 2, chorus 2, chorus 3, and final chorus.
  2. I tweaked the timing of the rhythm guitar in chorus 2.
  3. I added lead guitar to the bridge.
  4. I panned the lead guitar to left 38% opposite of the rhythm guitar track – right 38%.
  5. I committed the arrangement (in track arranger) to the project and save the project as “Song That Has No Name 3.”
  6. I used the “Low and thick” preset in Ozone 10 for the mastering plug-in.

Thursday, Dec. 1, 2022

This is mix: “Song That Has No Words 2 12-1-22.wav”

  1. I replaced the picked electric bass with gut-string acoustic bass.
  2. I tweaked the drum track so it would lead into the bridge from chorus 2 with a fill instead of a drum roll.

Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2022

This is “Song That Has No Words 2 11-30-22B.wav”

  1. This is a track I put together for Kevin experiment with for lyrics and melody.
  2. Key of A / tempo 88 bpm.
  3. This consists of piano, my new Ibanez electric, bass and drums.
  4. The structure is: 2 measure count-off: Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Verse, Chorus, Chorus, Chorus (fade)
  5. Only request I have regarding lyrics/meldoy is that vocal comes in immediately after count-off, e.g., “We Can Work It Out.”
  6. Good luck, Kevy!

"AUTUMN IN THE CITY"

Thursday, May 25, 2023

This is mix: “Autumn In The City 5 5-25-23B.wav”

  1. I brought the Sonitus limiter down a tad on Kevin’s lead vocal and compensated by raising the gain.
  2. I put Soothe2 “Harsh vocal II” on Kevin’s lead vocal.
  3. I raised the piano solo .5 dB.

Tuesday, May 9, 2023

This is mix: “Autumn In The City 3 5-9-23B.wav”

  1. Kevin punched in “Neighbor visits Neighbor” at 1:00 into the song.
  2. I remixed the volume of the piano parts by disabling the volume response to the host sequencer in Kontakt.
  3. I added a couple grace notes in the piano solo.

Tuesday, March 25, 2023

This is mix: “Autumn In The City 3 3 4-25-23B.wav”

  1. Kevin put on his vocals for Session #3 (go to Project Notes for details.)

Monday, March 20, 2023

This is a reference mix of “Autumn In The City” from Kevin’s 3/20/23 vocal session in which he put vocals on six songs.

Doug’s chord transcription

Friday, Nov. 25, 2022

This is mix: “Autumn In The City 2 11-25-22.wav”

  1. There are three tracks of strings: a) a cello section, b) a string quartet and c) an orchestral section. Today I mixed those three sections to get different shadings of strings and even dropped them out in spots for dynamic purposes.
  2. I raised the volume of the first solo piano section a tad.
  3. I extended the final piano chord a measure by moving the pedal up.
  4. The piano part for the final chorus somehow had been nudged forward 1/32 note, so I moved that back onto the beat.
  5. I added a couple piano parts to the first part of the choruses—octaves C, D, G.
  6. In the mastering I used a new Ozone 10 preset called “Center Focus.”

Thursday, Nov. 24, 2022

This is mix: “Autumn In The City 11-24-22.wav”

  1. I refined the string part by substituting VI.ONE orchestral libraries for the original Cakewalk SI strings plug-in. I duplicated the Cakewalk track and substituted cellos (from the VI.ONE library.) Then I added an orchestral string patch from VI.ONE for the run leading into the final chorus and a few other “thickening” passages to complement the cello track.
However, the string part at the end needs more work—as in dialing it back. But for today I’m knocking off as I’m tired, but I wanted to post today’s work although it needs to be mixed better.
  2. I upgrade my Kontakt Player to the full version Kontakt 7, so I could run the Malmsjo Grand Acoustic to replace the VI.ONE piano. So, I replaced both tracks of acoustic piano with the Malmsjo grand.
  3. I copied the “Autumn in the city” vocal line from the 2nd phrase and pasted it into the introductory “Autumn in the city” on verse 1.
  4. I mastered this at -2.8 dB on the master bus and tweaked it in Sound Forge ACL 4 using the “widening” preset.
  5. I added a reverb bus for the piano tracks.
  6. I cleaned up the pedaling on the piano tracks along with some of the note durations to reduce certain muddy passages.

Monday, Nov. 21, 2022

This is mix: “Autumn In The City 11-21-22.wav”

  1. Yesterday I had put drums (Drums On Demand loops), and today I muted all the drums until the very end as I didn’t think drums were essential to this mix.
  2. I redid some of the vocals—especially at the very beginning.
  3. I switched compressor settings on the vocal from a LA-2A to the generic compression in Sonitus dynamic.
  4. I tweaked the de-esser (reset it to its default settings.)
  5. I added some delay to the vocal in the [name plug-in.]
  6. I exported wav file and loaded into Found Forge ACL 4 to trim beginning and used the Ozone 10 plug-in.
  7. In Ozone 10 I used one of their new presets for mastering.
  8. Today I had Fatcow up my upload limit from 20MB to 500MB, so now I will upload wav files to this page as opposed to MP3s.
  9. I worked up a video for this song and posted it on YouTube.

Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022

This is mix: “Autumn In The City 11-19-22.mp3”

  1. I changed the intro.
  2. I tweaked the bass.
  3. I tweaked the strings.
  4. I added a piano interlude between the two choruses at the end.
  5. I added a piano & string “outro” at the end.
  6. I re-recorded the vocal on the last chorus.

This mix: “Autumn In The City sans vocal.mp3” is the same as above but without a vocal track.

Thursday, Nov. 17, 2022

This is mix: “Autumn In The City 11-17-22.mp3”

  1. I redid piano part—getting away from the eighth-note, right-hand pattern and transitioning to an Alberti bass pattern.
  2. I added an acoustic bass part from KeyRig’s GM voices.
  3. Added Cakewalk SI strings.
  4. Did a scratch vocal.
  5. Used one of the presets in Ozone 10 (a little too blistering with the compression!)

Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2022

This is mix: “Autumn In The City – frozen.mp3”

  1. Simply the structure of the song with piano and bass.
  2. Two measure intro
  3. Just a final chord at the end of the 2nd chorus.
  4. No spaces between verses, chorus, etc.
  5. The descending melodic line appears at the end of each verse. This line will not be in the final mix—just a vocal guide.
  6. Kevin’s tempo is 68 bpm which is what this is.

Monday, Nov. 14, 2022

This is “Autumn in the City 2nd verse.mp3”

  1. This is a suggested melody/harmony for that 2nd section of the verse.
  2. First chord is G, then G first inversion, then C,  Amin, Dsus4 > D, then C and finally G.

Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022

This is “Autumn In The City edited.mp3”

If we think of your verses as 1+2 being verse ONE, and 3+4 being verse THREE, then in this edit, we have:
INTRO
1+2 (verse 1)
1+2 (verse 2)
Chorus 1
Ins.
3+4 (verse 3)
Chorus
Chorus
Ending

Of course, I’m not suggesting that you repeat VERSE 1, but I’m using the 2nd instance of VERSE 1 as a “placeholder” for an eventual VERSE 2— the point being is that the melody and harmony should be consistent for the first 2 verses.

Project Notes:

3/7/23 – These are the first six songs that Kevin wants to record:

1. Autumn In The City 2-11/25/22
2. Traveling 5-BOOGNO1-160 bpm
3. When April Comes 2-3/4/23
4. I Wish You Love-3/6/23-Swaying 2
5. Harlem Goat
6. Lovely Susan 2-3/6/23-SPOPFNK-85 bpm

* * *

3/9/23 – Today I rendered the following four songs into their individual tracks to be loaded into Cakewalk into the following folders on my office computer.

UltraPAK > bb > When April Comes project > Travelin’ > Travelin’ 5 – render
UltraPAK > bb > When April Comes project > When April Comes > When April Comes 2 – render
UltraPAK > bb > When April Comes project > I Wish You Love > I Wish You Love –  render
UltraPAK > bb > When April Comes project > Lovely Susan > Lovely Susan 2 – render

I then copied and pasted the above four folders onto the Blaze USB flash drive for transfer to the studio computer:

USB DISK > When April Comes project >

* * *

I’m using a 64GB SP Blaze B02 USB flash drive to transfer files back and forth between my office computer and studio computer. This flash drive has a red “A” on the cap.

* * *

3/10/23 (Friday)

1. Today I transferred the following four rendered multitracks to the Seagate drive on my studio computer and set up the corresponding four songs in Cakewalk: “I Wish You Love” (65 bmp), “Lovely Susan” (85 bmp); “When April Comes” (68 bpm) and “Travelin'” (160 bpm.)

2. I also set up a main folder on the Seagate drive: “~ When April Comes project” and then a “Rendered multitrack” folder in which all the rendered multitrack folders for each song resides. Then there are individual folders for each song project, e.g., “Travelin'”, “Lovely Susan,” etc.

3. I double-checked the tempos of the rendered songs, ‘cuz they need to be set in Cakewalk. The tempo info is not transferred automatically from BIAB. If the tempo in Cakewalk isn’t set exactly to BIAB’s tempo, there is a subtle, faintly audible “sputtering” that occurs.

* * *

3/13/23 (Monday)

Confirmed Monday, March 20, 2023 at 2 PM for first vocal session with Kevin.

  • Travelin’
  • When April Comes
  • Lovely Susan
  • I Wish You Love
  • Harlem Goat
  • Autumn In The City (if time permits)

* * *

3/15/23 (Wednesday)

I tested the new Behringer interface with Cakewalk as follows:

a) I don’t need to use the headphone amp or the speaker monitor—everything is handled by the new interface.
b) I simply plug my headphones into one of the two headphone outs on the Behringer interface and Kevin’s into the other headphone out. Each has its own volume control.
c) I put a headphone extension cord on Kevin’s set of headphones.
d) I set up and tested the AKG mic with the new interface, and everything works great
e) I set up a Kevin’s Vocal track on each of the four songs listed below with vintage LA2A compressor and custom Breverb preset: “Kevin’s vocal reverb”

I set up the following songs in Cakewalk: 1) Travelin’, 2) Lovely Susan, 3) I Wish You Love and 4) When April Comes

Below is a new song that will be added to the project:

3/15/23 – I recorded this beautiful song is titled “Doug’s Bego” using snippets of mixes from Kevin’s When April Comes project — using the LA2A compressor and the custom Breverb preset on Doug’s stunning, improvisational vocals . . . enjoy . . . . ENJOY!!!

* * *

3/20/21 – Kevin came to the studio to start recording his vocals. Today he put vocals on the following six songs:

  • When April Comes
  • Harlem Goat 3-20-23
  • Autumn In The City 2 3-20-23
  • Travelin’ 3-20-23
  • Lovely Susan 3-20-23
  • I Wish You Love 3-20-23B

* * *

3/23/23 – I posted WAV files of the above 6 reference mixes under their respective headings on this page and also ripped “The Three Of Us” from Kevin’s 2009 recording session and created a heading for it on this page.

* * *

Friday, 3/24/23 – Today I rendered the following four songs into their multitrack versions. Check to be sure they seem okay for your vocals. There will be quite a bit of editing done on the arrangements, so don’t worry about an errant 7th or sudden tag at the end.

Also, decide which of the two arrangements of “She Always Loved You” that you prefer.

Above is “I Once Knew A Woman” in the FOLKROCK style at 150 BPM.

* * *

Saturday, 3/25/23 – Tonight I imported the multitrack versions of the following songs into Cakewalk: “I’m Coming Back,” “She’s Always Loved You 3,” “I Once Knew A Woman” and “It Starts With A Moment.” I also set up Kevin’s vocal track for each song with Sonitus Compressor (Kevin 2 preset) & Breverb (Kevin’s vocals preset.)

We’ve scheduled Kevin’s 2nd vocal session for Tuesday, March 28 at 2:00 PM (this was canceled and rescheduled for Monday, March 27 at 2:00 PM, because Caitlin was planning to visit Kevin on March 28.)

* * *

3/27/23 – Kevin came to the studio for his 2nd vocal session for this project. Today he put vocals on the following six songs:

  • I Once Knew A Woman
  • Travelin’ (redid portions)
  • It Starts With A Moment
  • Lovely Susan (redid portions)
  • I’m Coming Back
  • She’s Always Loved You

* * *

3/28/23 – I posted WAV files of the above 6 reference mixes under their respective headings on this page.

* * *

3/31/23 – I posted two, new mixes of “Lovely Susan” both at 100 BPM:

“Lovely Susan 5 – PASTURE.wav”

“Lovely Susan 4 – GRASPOP.wav”

* * *

4/1/23 – I rendered the multitracks for “Lovely Susan 5 – PASTURE” and loaded them onto the flash drive for transfer into Cakewalk.

* * *

4/2/23 – I rendered a wave file of “She’s Always Loved You 5” with just the rhythm guitar, bass and drums and posted it under its song heading on this page.

* * *

4/4/23 – [x] Set up “She’s Always Loved You” in Cakewalk and added guitar and harmonium.

* * *

4/25/23 – Kevin came to West Union for session #3 in which we:

  1. Re-recorded two lines in “Autumn In The City”
  2. Redid a line (up a 4th) in “I Once Knew A Woman”
  3. Recorded the lead vocals on “Lovely Susan”
  4. Recorded Kevin’s lead vocal on the new arrangement of “She’s Always Loved You;” added Kevin’s vocal harmonies, plus he and I did some “ooooo’s” and “ahhhhh’s.”
  5. On “Travelin'” Kevin recorded his new verses.

It was a grueling session lasting from 2 PM until, I think, 8 PM. We were both exhausted by the end, and Kevin ended up staying in West Union as he was too tired to drive back to Cedar Rapids.

Here are the rough mixes from Session #3:

This is mix: “Autumn In The City 3 3 4-25-23B.wav”

This is mix: “I Once Knew A Woman 4-25-23B.wav”

This is mix: “Lovely Susan 4-25-23.wav”

This is mix: “Lovely Susan 6 4-26-23.wav”

This is mix: “She’s Always Loved You 5 4-25-23.wav”

This is mix: “Travelin’ 4-25-23.wav”

* * *

5/9/23 – Kevin came to West Union for the 4th and final session for this project. Today we:

  1. Replaced the line “Neighbors visit neighbors” with “Neighbor visits neighbor” at 1:00 into “Autumn In The City.”
  2. Recorded a new lead vocal for “It Starts With A Moment.”

 * * *

5/10/23 – Enlisting the assistance of ChatGPT on 5/4/23, the following was Chat’s suggested order of songs for this CD (in parenthesis are the most-recent mixes for these songs.)

  1. Travelin’ (Travelin’ 4-25-23.wav)
  2. Lovely Susan (Lovely Susan 6 5-3-23.wav)
  3. The Three Of Us (The Three Of Us 5-4-23B.wav)
  4. It Starts With A Moment (It Starts With A Moment 5-9-23.wav)
  5. I Wish You Love (I Wish You Love 2 5-1-23.wav)

10. I Once Knew A Woman (I Once Knew A Woman 4-25-23B.wav)
11. Harlem Goat (Harlem Goat 3-20-23.wav)

5/10/23 – I’d created a folder, “Final Mixes” on USB DISK, the flash drive that I use to transfer mixes from the studio computer to my office computer. In the “Final Mixes” folder, I’ve put the most-recent mixes (above.)

5/11/23 – These mixes were then transferred into ACL on the studio computer to create and burn When April Comes test CD #1.

5/12/23 – Sent test CD #1 to Kevin.

* * *

5/22/23 – Sent out test CDs #4 and #5 to Kevin.

  1. In ACL I adjusted the levels of each song as follows:

Travelin’ 4-25-23 / -1.0dB
The Three Of Us 3 5-15-23 / -0.5dB
It Starts With A Moment 2 5-21-23 / -1.0dB
I Wish You Love 3 5-21-23 / intro -2.0dB / -1.0dB
Lovely Susan 6 5-3-23 / -1.0dB
She’s Always Loved You 5 5-10-23 / 0.0 dB
When April Comes 4-19-23 / -2.0dB
I’m Coming Back 4-19-23 / -1.0dB

I Once Knew A Woman 4-25-23B / intro +3.0dB / 0.0dB
Harlem Goat 2 5-14-23D / -2.6dB

2. I applied a bass roll-off to the entire project using a low-end shelf EQ at 28 Hz.

3. I engaged the Master limiter in ACL on the entire project.

4. The only difference between test CD #4 and CD #5 is that the Master output for CD #4 somehow got boosted about 2 dB. So, I set it back to 0.0 dB and re-burned the CD as #5.

* * *

5/23/23 – THINGS LEFT TO BE DONE

  1. [x] 5/26/23 – Write .WAV files from either test CD #4 or #5 using ACL – for upload to Distrokid

  • [x] 4/12/23 – Added rhythm guitar
  • [x] 3/27/23  At 1:09 get rid of “She moves” / replace with “Movin’ ’round the bar” ?
  • [—] At 1:34 maybe maybe avoid using the word “bar” instead something like: “the next stop’s/town/gig/stage/lady gonna be the best I’ve ever seen”
  • [—] In the choruses, instead of “I don’t have enough conviction to make my feet stand still” how about something like “I haven’t found that special lady to make my feet stand still” ?
  • [—] change 2nd verse line to: “The nights came to life, when she was near.” (get rid of the word “always.”)
  • [x] 4/14/23 – Put lead guitar on turnaround after 2nd chorus.
  • [—] Sync acoustic guitar release with bass release at end of song. Decided this is not necessary.
  • [x] 4/13/23 – Added Doug’s harmony vocals on chorus.
  • [x] Dial back the reverb on Kevin’s lead vocal.
  • [x] 4/15/23 – I redid the lead guitar part and got rid of the slide up. And mixed the release tail so that it doesn’t overlap the following vocal.
  • [x] 4/15/23 – I sync’ed up the background vocals to the 2nd chorus.

3. When April Comes (3/4/23 – “When April Comes 2.wav”)

7. Lovely Susan (Mark wrote lyrics) – (3/5/23 – “Lovely Susan – SPOPFNK.wav”)

  • 3/20/23 – Kevin’s lead vocal recorded.
  • [x] 3/27/23 – I’m thinking we need to lighten up the first phrase in each verse by changing the melody and rhythm slightly—a little more melodic interest and maybe a little syncopation. I’ll post an example here in a couple days. The way it is now seems kind of heavy/plodding. The rest of the prosody in the song is great.
  • I think there might be room for some horn stabs.
  • I can hear some good vocal harmonies.
  • [—] 3/31/23 – Kevin nixed the following ‘cuz he liked the new uptempo versions (see below.) Work up a ballad version upping the tempo from 68 to maybe 72 and consider using a different style other than SAAVY.
  • [x] 3/27/23 – Worked up two, new uptempo versions using a different style other than SPOPFUNK to which Kevin can write a more-compatible melody line. 3/31/23 – Kevin liked both the uptempo versions, “Lovely Susan 5 – PASTURE.wav” and “Lovely Susan 4 – GRASPOP.wav”, that I worked up today. I’m most partial to “Lovely Susan 5”.
  • [x] Did a multitrack render of “Lovely Susan 5”
  • [x] 4/15/23 – Added acoustic guitar (Storia) to entire mix. Used an EQ setting with a high-pass filter so this track doesn’t muddy up the mix.

8. I’m Coming Back (2/23/23 – “I’m Coming Back 2-23-23 E.wav” 125 bpm.)

  • 3/27/23 – Kevin’s lead vocal recorded.
  • [x] Replaced BIAB keyboard part (lots of cut off fragments) with possibly Cakewalk Studio Instruments > E. Piano (I ended up using an electric piano from the VI.ONE library.)
  • [x] 4/15/23 – I redid the harmonium part.

9. I Once Knew A Woman (Mark – Jan 7, 2023 – Gmail) 2nd version (worked up demo in BIAB on 2/19/23 – from Kevin’s Feb 7 email.)

  • 4/25/23 – Changed Kevin’s vocal melody line at :58 to go up a perfect 4th: “And I lost control of my life AGAIN.”

10. It Starts With A Moment (2/19/23 – “Moment merged.wav” key D / 116 BPM)

  • 3/27/23 – Kevin’s lead vocal recorded.
  • [x] 5/2/23 – Reduced the reverb on Kevin’s vocal – mixing it relatively dry, because of the lack of reverb on the backing tracks.
  • [x] 5/2/23 Added flute and electric piano.
